 | Heritage Coconut Jewellery Giving a go-by to the craze for gold and diamond jewellery, a newly married couple here exchanged wedding vows wearing ornaments crafted from coconut shells. Dressed in 'Chatta' and 'Mundu', the traditional attire of Roman Catholics in Kerala, Elizabeth Varghese got married to Antony Chandy at the St Basilica church here today, adorned with ornaments made from coconut shells. Gold ornaments had never caught her fancy right from a young age, her relatives said. Instead, she preferred to get married wearing ornaments, ear rings, bangles and chains and even a 'wrist watch' crafted out of coconut shells.
The groom, Antony John, readily accepted her wish to get married wearing the ornaments of her choice. The ornaments, costing about Rs 40,000 were crafted by Anigar, a craftsman from Thrissur. Elizabeth, grand daughter of M V Pylee, former Vice Chancellor of Cochin University of Science and Technology, was earlier working as an advocate in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands when she took a liking to coconut shell ornaments.
